This was very interesting. I had heard about the Pullman strike, but I didn't know the causes. I grew up in a labor family. Fortunately, we didn't have to endure a strike like that. It's unfortunate that the labor movement has become so diluted. Union membership doesn't seem to carry the weight it once did. I keep hoping people will wake up to what's happening around them.
I grew up in a labor family as well and one of my first jobs was a factory job, so I couldn't agree more bout modern labor unions. Reading about the many, many strikes in the last 1800s - early 1900s is so fascinating to me. It really hits home because most of my family arrived between 1903 and 1913. As immigrants, those were the jobs everyone had. I appreciate their hard work, and feel the work ethic I was taught as a child was handed down by them.
It was such an enjoyable piece to write! I always love discovering new things while working on projects like this. I also find it fascinating to imagine how my own ancestors might have experienced moments similar to the Pullman Strike. Writing about ordinary citizens standing up and fighting for their rights is truly my favorite kind of storytelling.
I know, right? My great-grandfather was a newspaper editor for over 65 years in a small town in rural Kansas. He wrote about just about everything, but I've felt as though I lacked much of the context to understand what he was truly for and against. That's an effort that's still in my queue. At least I know it was documented.
An interesting piece of history I knew nothing about. Thank you. I am not sure if I have any railroad relatives, but this is great background if I do find any. Actually come to think of it I do know of one distant relative by marriage from Tennessee and will need to check if the dates fit. From memory, I think he may have been working later than than this specific incident.
